June 28/June 29
So Saturday was nothing more than a travel day, but it was way more successful than our first attempt. Compared to the first time, the day started much, much earlier. We made it to the airport for our 10 am flight without a hitch. The flight was pretty uneventful and we made it to JFK safely. Our layover there was spent people watching. We were even lucky enough to meet some people who accompanied us for a few parts of our journey. Gina and Malia were two nice women who were headed to Uganda on mission work. We also met Sam #1. He was from Uganda and was flying back with us for the entire way, which turned out to be a really lucky thing. After a few hours of waiting we finally boarded our flight. Jordan and I were even sitting next to Malia, which was a pleasant surprise. The 11 hour flight to Cairo was better than expected. Our airline served "delicious airplane food," had movies and plenty of entertainment, and I was able to get a few hours of shut eye. Once we arrived in Cairo, we had planned to hang out in the airport even though we had a pretty long layover. We had been getting emails from the US Embassy about riots that were taking place. They warned all travelers to either avoid Cairo or avoid exploring if you were "fortunate" enough to be there. But...our plans changed a little! Apparently the people in Egypt are strongly against people hanging out in the airport. So Jordan, myself, Gina, and Malia were given a voucher for a hotel room and meals! How could we say no to that?! So we all purchased our Egyptian visas (easier said than done) and headed outside to find the shuttle to La Passage Hotel. We were told the shuttle ran every 10 minutes but after running into our friend Sam#1 again, he quickly explained that people most likely told us a little white lie. After a short wait, we arrived at the hotel. (Safely despite the crazy driving over there). Being the cool travelers we were, we ate lunch, rested our swollen ankles, and walked around. We also bought a few souvenirs. Finally, it was time to head back to the airport. The last leg of our journey was also pretty uneventful...well until we actually arrived at the Entebee airport at 3:30 am.
